Training Wheels

from Klickitat Demos by Michaela

lyrics

I never thought I would stay until the wheels came off; 20 years and a day later I'm still right here, right behind with the peroxide and a new box of band-aids. A baseball card in the spokes in spite of my hopes
I know it won't always be there

Over the click-click-clack of the plastic wheels running over the pavement I hear: "I can do it by myself now! I can do it alone!"

One sunny Saturday, in 1980, I let you ride all the way around the block.
But, I let go of your neck, and the subsequent wreck had you splayed across the sidewalk. But you stood up with a grin, though your knees were skinned, and I felt knew right then:

The click-click-clack of the plastic---your helmet hitting the pavement---
I thought: "I'm not ready for this yet. I'm not ready to let go."

Almost like yesterday, I can remember the way I'd let you sit on my lap and steer. Now I'm here on the passenger side and I'm watchin' you grind your way into third gear. You stalled in the parking lot, in the car I bought, the year you were born.

Over the click-click-clack of the plastic, the cup holder rattles in traffic,
I hear: "I can do it by myself now, I can do it alone.."
